Recently at JadeLiquid, we posted up a blog on our site about configuring Subversion, Hudson and LiquidTest in order to automate not just your build , but your functional / front end tests as well. We have had a great response from the Agile Developer community to this blog.

However, it got me wondering: With the increasing adoption of Agile methodologies, should Testers be interested in this as well? It is after all about automating Tests with each build (once setup), but is the Source control and the Build Server beyond the scope / requirements for the Tester, or is this already an area Testers are familiar with?

Ya i think the percentage of testers who are familiar in this area is less.

But we should have good underatanding on how the build is generated and what all scripts need to be run. In our Company many projects use CCNet Tools/CruiseContrl for build generation which generates build for each check-in or daily builds.

Hello, I think that it is very important for all the member of testers team - they need to have some knowledge about building application and distributing via InstallKits. We use this approach with it's advantages - local builds and night and continuous building via cruisecontrol, hudson or the other. The building process is the basic knowledge especially for senior tester - from my point of view and experiences.

Yes, i dont think Testers need to be able to set up the build environment. But having a knowledge of how it works, and even the ability to kick off a build so they can test particular fixes, is important.

Thanks for the responses , most appreciated.

If a tester knows how to Deploy a code written by developer its well and good its added knowledge but not mandatory to know it.
But Testers should know in which enviroment they are working like Database is pointing to UAT server or production server or test server,Also whether Deployement of code is temporary i.e whether there will any change in deployement of code often during testing phase or will remain the same throughout the testing phase till all the bugs have been explored
